Adding your films

Click Add Folder in the toolbar and pick the folders your films and shows are in. Lumen reads them, sorts films from TV shows by their names, and adds new files as they arrive. Drives that are unplugged show as offline and come back when you plug them in.

Why is a video under Clips?

Lumen counts videos of 40 minutes or more as films. Shorter ones that aren't TV episodes, like samples, home videos and trailers, go to Clips, so Films only holds films. All videos shows everything.

My episodes show up as films

Lumen recognises names like Show Name S01E02, Show Name 1x02, Show Name - 003, and files inside a Show Name/Season 1 folder. Renaming the file to one of these puts it under TV shows.

Servers and shares

In the sidebar, Add Media Server… signs in to Jellyfin, Emby or Plex, and Add Network Share… connects an SMB, NFS or WebDAV share. Lumen plays the original files, so every format plays as it does from a folder.

Cloud drives

Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive are in testing. During the beta each needs an API app's keys; Add Cloud Storage… shows where to make one and takes its keys. The release will sign in with one click.

HDR looks dim or flat

On a screen without HDR, Lumen converts HDR to normal brightness, so it won't look as bright as on an HDR screen. With an external HDR display, turn on High Dynamic Range for it in System Settings ▸ Displays. Press H while playing to compare with and without Lumen's conversion.

Subtitles

Lumen shows subtitles inside the file and next to it, and can search OpenSubtitles from the player. Settings ▸ Subtitles sets the font, size, colours and position. Z and X shift their timing.

Profiles and age limits

Settings ▸ Profiles adds a profile for each person, each with their own watched list. A profile can have an age limit, which hides films and shows rated above it; set a PIN so children can't switch out of it.

Watching on more than one Mac

Turn on Settings ▸ Sync ▸ Sync places and watched through iCloud Drive on each Mac. A film started on one carries on from the same place on the other, wherever each keeps the file.

Your iPhone as a remote

Turn on Settings ▸ Playback ▸ iPhone remote and scan the code with the iPhone's camera. The phone needs to be on the same Wi-Fi as the Mac.

Something isn't working

Email meruappsdev@gmail.com with your Lumen version (Settings ▸ About), your macOS version, what you did and what happened. For a file that won't play, say what kind of file it is; Lumen's statistics (press I while playing) show its formats.
